For the third year in a row, International School Savremena has organised lessons outside the school premises in the “classroom without walls”, thus marking the first week of school in a truly different way. This was an interesting and exciting way to take advantage of the beautiful weather and get to know their new friends and teachers better while learning something new.

Interesting lessons on Tuesday

On the second day of school, the new class of Year 10 students got to see Belgrade from a different angle – the river. For them, International School Savremena organised a cruise on the Danube and the Sava, during which they learnt a lot of new things about our capital city from their teachers, and had lots of fun with their classmates.

During the two-hour long cruise, the students revised what they already knew about the capital of Serbia, but also learnt which famous historical figures left their trace in its history. Moreover, they broadened their knowledge about geography, discovered the stories behind the names of popular landmarks, and how the capital changed over time, discussing everything they found interesting with their teachers. Horse Island, the River Navy, the Great War Island, the Nebojša Tower, and the Museum of Modern Art were only some of the topics talked about during this adventure.

While their younger friends were enjoying their time learning something new on the river, Savremena’s older students in Year 11 also experienced an unusual view of Belgrade, from the rooftop of a tour bus. They got to see what our capital city looked like and cruised along the streets of Belgrade while listening to the stories about the city’s most popular and important landmarks. This was a great opportunity to learn about the important historical figures who breathed soul into our capital, but also to make friendships between students stronger.

Finding their way around in the great outdoors on Friday

After learning more about Belgrade, Savremena’s students were faced with a real mental and physical warm-up, taking part in the adventurous and fun games International School Savremena created for them. This was a perfect way to end the first week of school in nature before going back to the hi-tech classrooms.

Kalemegdan was a great place for a treasure hunt game, as it has numerous historical places with unusual and interesting stories for our Year 10 students to learn. To help the students find their way around those locations, geography teacher Ivan Matejić had made an unusual map of Kalemegdan, while other teachers made their contribution to this game by creating rhymed clues to lead the students from one location to another, and, finally, to the treasure itself. The students were excited about solving all the riddles and answering questions from all school subjects, thus showing their admirable knowledge and great team spirit.

Kalemegdan was not the only location for outdoor activities this year. On the same day, Year 11 students headed to Hyde Park for another unforgettable adventure in the classroom without walls. There, they had a very demanding task to find their way around in the great outdoors and reach the finish line before their peers in an orienteering game. For this game, instead of maps, they used compasses and measuring tapes to get from one point to another, and crossed numerous kilometres in order to reach all the points and solve the tasks at each of them.

Tuesday reserves for Botanical Garden

Another exciting adventure was waiting for Savremena’s older students, Year 12 and Year 13 at the Jevremovac Botanical Garden. The students set off on a quest for the hidden places and plant species and got the chance to try out a new kind of selfie – bio-selfie. They combined their imagination with logical and problem-solving skills to move from one point to another, while also testing their agility, knowledge and strategy and strengthening their friendship with their classmates.

From exploring nature to intelligent classrooms

These interesting and interdisciplinary activities have prepared our students for a truly different school experience at International School Savremena. Although they had a great time outdoors, we are sure they can’t wait to step into their intelligent classrooms and see what technologies they will be using to help them in their education and facilitate their learning.
