It has become a tradition for Savremena International School to begin the new school year outside the classrooms in which the students spend most of their year. In order to make the most of the last days of summer, Savremena’s teachers and students enjoyed the lovely weather and had their lessons outdoors, which made the students delighted.
The river, not the chair for the first lesson
On their second school day, the younger students had the chance to view Belgrade from a different angle – from the river. Cruising along the Danube and the Sava, the students not only broadened their knowledge about our capital, but also made new friends and got to know their classmates better.
In this two-hour long adventure, the students learned which famous historic figures left their trace in the history of Belgrade, what is behind the names of popular landmarks, and how the capital changed over time. Knowledge-thirsty students and their cheerful teachers spent the day discussing the Horse Island, the River Navy, the Great War Island, the Nebojša Tower, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Savremena’s Olympic Games for an active start of the new school year
On the first day of school, the physical education teacher Stefan Radojičić had a good reason to introduce himself like this:
“Do you know whose motto is faster, higher, stronger? It is the motto of the Olympic Games, and we are going to live by it in my classes.” Seven days later, the teacher took his students to Kovilovo Sports Centre to compete at Olympic Games of their own.
Three-pointer shooting, human-size foosball, tug of war, static volleyball, running, table tennis and ring toss were only some of the events our students competed in and enjoyed. The teachers took the role of coaches and supported their teams that strived for obtaining as many points as possible to take the final victory.
The entire day was coloured with competitive spirit. And even though only one team took the victory, it was unanimously agreed that the sports day at Kovilovo would be remembered for the positive energy and great fun.
Step by step towards the treasure at Kalemegdan
The teachers at Savremena International School left the treasure hunt, as one of the most interesting activities, for the conclusion of the outdoor days. This adventurous and creative game was devised as a mental and physical warm-up for the students, and that is exactly what it accomplished.
But there is no treasure hunt without a map, is there?
In order to help the students reach the treasure, the geography teacher Ivan Matejić made an unusual map of Kalemegdan, while the language teachers came up with rhymed riddles that led students from one spot on the map to another and, eventually, to the treasure site itself.
This way, Savremena’s students learned about their city, its landmarks, and the hidden parts of the famous Belgrade fortress.
From classrooms without walls to high-tech classrooms
After the interesting games and outdoor lessons, the students couldn’t wait to experience the advantages of studying in their modern classrooms, see what technologies they would be using, and get an even clearer picture of the perks of being a student at a truly different school.
The fun activities Savremena prepared for its students’ first week of school were designed to motivate them to do their best to achieve good marks, and facilitate their progress in the year ahead.
