School stories

Learning a foreign language is at its most efficient when it is fun and when it simulates real life situations. This is why at Savremena International School’s foreign language lessons the students are encouraged to participate in the conversation as much as possible, thus mastering the language as if it were their mother tongue.

To evoke Spanish culture and everyday life of the Spaniards, and practically implement the knowledge from the previously covered units, Savremena’s students turned the classroom into a Spanish Tapas bar during a Spanish language lesson.

Restaurant ambience for learning everyday phrases

Slika_13After arranging the classroom so that it resembled an veritable restaurant, the students divided the roles of waiters and guests among themselves. The Spanish restaurant’s menu was overflowing with food and drinks typical for the Spanish area, which was ordered by the “guests” and served by the students who played the role of the waiters.

Enacting the Tapas bar environment and all the while communicating in Spanish, the students were able to apply the new words they had learned from the earlier lessons, and gain insight into what phrases are in daily use when visiting restaurants and bars.

Music for easier language studySlika_7

Student Aleksandar Kosanović completed the picture of the improvised restaurant in the Spanish class, playing Spanish songs on the guitar and thereby contributing to the positive mood. Relaxing with refreshments and music, the students made plans for the forthcoming weekend, solidifying their knowledge from the lesson on leisure activities.

Discussing their plans, the students used their knowledge of Spanish to share with their friends what they would otherwise say in their mother language.

Simulating real life situations for quality language learning

Learning foreign words and phrases makes sense only when we know how to properly use them in concrete life situations. This is why the students of Savremena International School are encouraged to not only learn lessons from books, but also know how to apply what they have learned from them in practice.

Interactive exercises, such as this one in the form of a Spanish restaurant, prepare the students to use a foreign language at a high conversational level.
